Movies

When I was a seven year old kid living on a military base in Cold Lake, Alberta my parents would give me two dollars every Saturday morning so I could take my younger brother to catch the matinee at the local theatre. Tickets were two-bits ($0.50) each and the rest was spent on Sweet Tarts, Spree, Jawbreakers or other candy.

Favourite Black & White movies

  • La Haine (1995) French, amazing, launched several careers
  • Singing in the Rain (1952) iconic rom com musical with incredible dance
  • Citizen Kane (1941) a film of epic proportions, Orson Welles was only 25 when he wrote, directed and starred in this classic.
  • Psycho (1960) classic Hitchcock, iconic scenes.
  • Dr Strangelove (1964) Stanley Kubrick cold war comedy, eminently quotable

In the 90s we used to go to see second run films at The Palace on Ste-Catherine St, Montreal. Tickets were $2. The low price let us see movies that we'd likely never had seen otherwise. The Game (1997) was a great $2 movie. Eventually The Palace was gutted and turned into a parking garage.
